We help teenagers and young women understand and learn to observe subtle, natural changes in their bodies as they go through their menstrual cycles. It’s like taking special vital signs on the female body. This is based on more than 50 years of scientific research into what values are healthy or may not be healthy.  These observations can help lead to diagnosis and treatment of problems young women may have.

Once these vital signs are recorded for a few cycles, we will order lab tests to understand hormone levels at individualized times in our patient’s cycle. The results obtained will then guide our treatment. Sometimes we use supplemental bioidentical (natural) progesterone to balance the cycle into a healthier pattern. We may recommend nutritional or activity changes as part of the treatment. We do not prescribe artificial hormones or devices for our patients. This detailed evaluation can help with early detection of polycystic ovarian disease, endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome, bleeding disorders, thyroid problems or other endocrine diseases as well as the prevention of infertility. We can also treat their acne and painful periods this way.

A common approach today is to treat many menstrual problems with contraceptive medications. Unfortunately, this approach doesn’t evaluate why the young woman is having her symptoms. It also doesn’t treat the underlying cause. Our approach is focused on understanding why a young woman is having a menstrual cycle problem and treating that underlying problem.

We offer consultation and treatment for young women from puberty to 22 years old.

Dr. Elizabeth Abraham MD, MS is double board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. She holds a master’s degree in clinical research. She founded St. Teresa Pediatrics after serving on the faculty at the St. Louis University School of Medicine.

Dr. Abraham is one of a few pediatricians in the world who is a medical consultant in Natural Family Planning (NFP). She knows that the tools of NFP can be used to diagnose and treat the underlying causes of menstrual problems such as PMS, hormonal acne, and painful periods. This is based on decades of research in women overall.

Agnes E. Bayer, CPNP, CFCP is a certified FertilityCare practitioner and teaches the Creighton model of Natural Family Planning to couples and mother-daughters. She is very passionate about empowering young women to know their bodies and help detect underlying medical problems in patients who have difficult periods.
